PRESENTATION OF THE EVENTS

ORGANIZATION

UTMB Group organizes the UTMB® in collaboration with the Trailers du Mont Blanc association, the support of the municipalities of Chamonix, Courmayeur, Orsières, Bourg Saint Maurice, Les Houches, Saint Gervais Mont-Blanc, Servoz, Vallorcine, Hauteluce, Beaufort, Séez, Les Contamines Montjoie, La Thuile, Pré Saint Didier, Morgex, Martigny-Combe, Trient and Bovernier.  

ACCEPTING THE REGULATIONS AND ETHICS OF THE RACE

Participating in the UTMB® events implies full and unreserved acceptance of the regulations presented hereinafter, the ethics of the event and any instructions addressed by the organiser to the participants.  

DEFINITION OF THE EVENTS

The UTMB® is an event which includes several events in the open country, winding through the great hiking routes of the Mont-Blanc and the Beaufort region. Each event takes place in one single stage, at an undefined pace within a time limit.

  • The UTMB®: around 171 km and about 10 000 metres elevation gain, starts from Chamonix, in semi-autonomy and in  46 hrs 30 mins max. Around 2300 runners.
  • The CCC®: around 101 km and about 6 100 metres elevation gain, starts from Courmayeur, in semi-autonomy and in  26hrs 30 mins max. The start is organised in three waves to help the fluidity of the race. Start zones calculated according to the ITRA's performance index's criteria . Around 1900 runners.
  • The TDS®: around 145 km and about 9 100 metres elevation gain, starts from Courmayeur, in semi-autonomy and in of 44 hrs max. Around 1600 runners.
  • The OCC: around 56 km and about 3 500 metres elevation gain, starts from Orsières, in semi-autonomy and in14hrs 30 mins max. Around 1200 runners.
  • The MCC: around 40 km and about 2300 metres elevation gain, starts from Martigny-Combe, in semi-autonomy and in  10 hours max the race is reserved for volunteers, members of the organization, people residing in the Mont-Blanc territory, partners, people living in Valais, Aosta Valley, Savoie and Haute-Savoie (a lottery will be carried out if there are more applications than the number of places available). Around 1000 runners.
  • The PTL®: this event is significantly different from the other  events and has its own regulations
  • The YCC: a challenge dedicated to the young runners born between 1998 and 2006, consisting of a prologue in Chamonix on Tuesday of the event week, at the end of the afternoon, and a 5 to 15 km event (depending on the category) in Courmayeur the following day. Around 300 runners. This race has its own regulations.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION AND REGISTRATION

CONDITIONS OF REGISTRATION

The organization of the UTMB® has established a list of qualifying races for the 2020 UTMB®. Each race listed awards between 1 and 6 points, you need to have acquired the minimum number of points by having finished, exclusively between 01/01/2018 et le 31/12/2019 (*) , some of the races on the list :

  • UTMB® :  minimum of 10 points in 2 races maximum
  • CCC® : minimum  of 6 points in 2 races maximum
  • TDS® : minimum of 8 points  in 2 races maximum
  • OCC : minimum  of 4 points in 2  races
  • MCC : no qualifying points necessary

(*) 2017  finishers of UTMB® races may as well use these races as qualifying races.

In the event of an inaccurate, non-compliant or misleading declaration regarding the qualifying races, the organization reserves the right to cancel the registration without refunding the entry fee. Note : in the case of a qualifying race having been shortened, the premature termination of a race or its cancellation, the qualifying points will be recalculated in relation to the actual race characteristics.

The races are open to any person, male or female, born in or before 2000 (categories espoirs to veteran,  see the details here), licensed, or not, except for the  YCC which is open to runners born between 1996 and 2002 (categories espoirs, juniors and cadets).

To validate their registration, runners must :

1. Supply a specific medical certificate (*). It must be uploaded to their runner's page before May 31st 2020 (the organization does not accept medical certificates sent by email or mail).
If no medical certificate is received by this date, the registration will be cancelled without refund. Warning: as per the FFA regulations, all medical certificates must be provided in French. We strongly advise you to use our official medical certificate template (already including the translation). Any untranslated certificate will be refused.
(*) at the end of the registration procedure, each runner will receive a confirmation email with, as an attachment, the official medical certificate form.

2. Before July 31st, 2020, undertake all the additional actions required to finalize your registration (declaration of honor, decide where to collect their race bib, transport booking, t-shirt size, telephone number, etc.) via an online form available on your runner’s space.

No bib will be issued in the absence of the medical certificate and if all the additional actions required to finalize your registration have not been completed

3. Runners born in or after 2002, minors on the date of the event, must provide parental authorisation.

ENTRY FEE

It is only possible to register on the the internet and via secure payment by credit card.

Including the 2020 films in HD streaming, a tailored souvenir video clip (based on webcam images), a 1.5€  Eco fee per person to finance the cleaning, repairing or rehabilitation of trails, and 10€  for the 2020 membership of the Trailers du Mont-Blanc association.

The fee covers all the services described in the current regulations.

Registration is personal. It is not permitted to transfer the entry to another person for any reason whatsoever.

RUNNER'S COMMITMENT

To participate in the UTMB® events, in particular the UTMB®,  CCC® and TDS®, it is essential :

  • To be completely aware of the length and  specificity of the event and to be perfectly prepared for it ;
  • To have  acquired, previous to the race, a real capacity of personal autonomy in the mountains  (1) allowing for the management of problems induced by this type of event and to:
    • Know how to confront, without external help, climatic conditions which could be very difficult to deal with at high altitude ( night, wind, cold, fog, rain or snow) ;
    • Know how to manage, including when one is isolated, physical or mental problems arising from a great fatigue, digestive problems, muscle or articular pains, small wounds...
    • To be totally conscious that the organisation's role is not to help a runner manage these problems;
    • To be totally aware that for such an activity in the mountains security depends upon the runner's capacity to adapt to the problems encountered or foreseen
    • To inform and to sensitize the members of the runner’s entourage towards the respect of nature, people and the regulations of the race.
    • To accept to receive newsletters providing information about the event.

(1) participation in other races in order to have the required number of points (see paragraph REGISTRATION CONDITIONS) to register, is useful for acquiring this experience, but not necessarily sufficient .

SEMI AUTONOMY

The principle is that of a race in semi-autonomy. The UTMB® events take place in one single stage, at an undefined pace, within the the cut-off times which are different for each event. Semi-autonomy is defined as having the capacity to be autonomous between two aid stations, as much on the food front as that of clothing and security, being able to adapt to unexpected or foreseeable problems (bad weather, physical problems, injury...)

This implies, in particular, the following rules:

  1. Runners must have with them the totality of their obligatory gear (see paragraph EQUIPMENT) for the whole race. They have to carry their equipment in a pack, tagged during race-pack collection, which can not be changed along the race route. At any moment of the race, the race stewards can verify the pack and its contents. The runner is obliged to submit to these checks with cordiality, at the risk of exclusion from the race.
  2. Aid stations supply drinks and food to be consumed on site. The organization only supplies still water or energising drink for filling water bottles or hydration packs.  Runners should make sure they have, when leaving each aid station, the quantity of drink and food which is necessary to keep them going until the following aid station.
    For slower runners, the longest sections without aid stations can last more than 4hrs during the UTMB®, more than 3hrs during the  CCC® and OCC and more than  6hrs during the TDS®.
  3. For theUTMB®,  CCC® and TDS®, a personal assistant is tolerated exclusively at certain aid stations (*), in the zone specifically reserved for this use and at the discretion of the aid station team leader. Runners can only have one assistant, without specific equipment other than a bag with a maximum volume of  30 litres. Assistance given by a team of professionals, or any medic or paramedic, is strictly forbidden.
    A part from this area, the rest of the aid station is strictly reserved for runners.
    No assistance is allowed, at any point along the race route, during the OCC,  MCC and YCC.
  4. Outside of the zones where assistance is allowed - which are clearly marked in the proximity of the aid station - it is forbidden to accompany or be accompanied along any part of the race route by someone who is not registered for the race.

Note : A participant who accepts being filmed, and therefore accompanied, outside of the expressly designated zones contravenes the principle of semi-autonomy. Race stewards  witnessing irregularities are authorised to penalise the participants in order to guarantee the spirit of trail-running events.

(*) Personal assistance is tolerated at the following aid stations  :
UTMB® : Les Contamines Montjoie, Courmayeur, Champex, Trient, Vallorcine
CCC® : Champex, Trient, Vallorcine
TDS® : Bourg St Maurice, Beaufort, Les Contamines Montjoie
It is forbidden at all other aid stations, as well as at any other point of the race route.
OCC, MCC, YCC : no assistance is allowed at any point of the race

EQUIPMENT

In order to ensure their security and the smooth running of the each event, each participant must carry with them all the items listed in the mandatory equipment checklist (see below).
The  “heat-wave”, “winter” and “bad weather” kits form part of the mandatory equipment. According to the weather conditions, the organizers can activate a kit and inform each participant before the opening of the race-pack collection. Each participant must therefore present their obligatory equipment, including the kit activated by the organisers, in order to get their race-bib, and agree to keep it with them throughout the event.

Please note: the items included in the mandatory equipment checklist are the basics which each trail-runner must adapt according to their own skills. In particular, one should not choose the lightest possible clothing in order to gain a few grams, but prefer clothing that really provides good protection in the mountains against cold, wind and snow, and therefore better safety and performance.

UTMB® CCC® TDS®  mandatory equipment checklist 

Basic kit

  • Running pack to transport mandatory gear throughout the race.
  • Mobile phone (smartphone strongly recommended): the runner must be reachable at any time before, during and after the race:
    - mobile phone with international roaming allowing for its use in the three countries (load into its memory the organization's security numbers, don't mask your number and don't forget to take the start of your race with the battery fully charged)
    - Keep the phone on, airplane mode is prohibited and could give rise to penalties.
    - For smartphones: LiveRun application installed and activated.
    - An external battery is highly recommended
  • Personal beaker 15 cl minimum (bottles or flasks with lids are not accepted)
  • Minimum water supply: 1 litre
  • 2 torches in good working order with spare cells/batteries for each torch
    Recommendation : 200 lumens or more for the main torch
  • Survival blanket of 1.40m x 2m minimum
  • Whistle
  • Self adhering elastic bandage for bandaging or strapping (minimum 100 cm x 6 cm)
  • Food reserve
    Recommendation : 800kcal (2 gels + 2 power bars each of 65g )
  • Jacket with hood for bad weather in the mountains. The jacket must be made with a waterproof* and breathable** membrane (eg. Outdry)
    *minimum recommended 10 000 Schmerber
    **RET recommended inferior to 13
    - the jacket must, imperatively, have an integrated hood or one which is attached to the jacket by the original system designed for that purpose by the manufacturer. 
    - the seams must be sealed.
    - the jacket must not have sections of fabric which are not waterproof, but air vents fitted by the manufacturer (under-arm, in the back), since they do not damage in any obvious way the impermeability, are accepted.
    The runner must judge whether, according to the beforementioned criteria,  the jacket complies with the regulations and therefore is suitable for bad weather in the mountains. However, during a check, the race director’s opinion on the matter shall prevail.
  • Long-legged trousers or race leggings  OR a combination of leggings and socks to cover the legs completely
  • Cap or bandana or Buff®
  • Additional warm second layer: a warm second layer top with long sleeves (excluding cotton) weighing at least 180g (men's size medium - M) OR the combination of a long-sleeved warm undergarment (first or second layer, excluding cotton) weighing at least 110g (men's size medium - M) and a windproof jacket* with durable water-repellent protection (DWR protection)
    *the wind-proof jacket does not replace the mandatory waterproof jacket, and vice versa
  • Hat
  • Warm and water-proof gloves
  • Waterproof overpants
  • ID – passport/ID card

Hot weather kit (may be required by the organization, depending on weather conditions)

  • Sun glasses ***
  • Saharan cap or any combination which completely covers the head and nape of the neck
  • Sunscreen
    Recommendation: minimum sun protection factor (SPF) 50 
  • Minimum water supply: 2 litres

Cold weather kit (may be required by the organization, depending on weather conditions)

  • Protective eyewear ***
  • 3rd warm layer  (intermediary layer between the 2nd layer and the waterproof jacket)
  • Recommendation : fleece or compressible down jacket
  • Sturdy, closed-toe trail-running shoes (minimalist or ultralight shoes excluded)

*** it is possible to use the same glasses if they are suited both to the sun and bad weather (such as glasses with photo-chromatic lenses )

All clothing items must fit the runner (in terms of size) and they must not be altered in any way after leaving the factory.
The mandatory gear must be carried in a running pack for the duration of the whole race.  The running pack is tagged during race-bib distribution and must not be changed during the race.

Other recommended equipment (non exhaustive checklist)

  • Spare warm clothing, essential in case of cold and rainy weather or in case of injury
  • Poles in the case of rain or snow for your safety on slippery ground
  • Vaseline or anti-heat cream
  • at least 20€ cash (just in case...).
  • Reusable bowl
  • GPS watch
  • Knife or scissors for cutting elastic bandage
  • Emergency sewing kit...

If you choose to take hiking poles with you, you have to carry them for the duration of the whole race. It is forbidden to take the start without poles and get them during the course of the race.
No poles are authorised in the spare bags.

OCC MCC mandatory equipment checklist

QUARTZ EVENT PROGRAM

The Organization has decided to set up the QUARTZ Event Program to protect participant’s health and to contribute to doping-free sport.

The QUARTZ Event Program is not meant to replace anti-doping rules but is aimed to strengthen the medical supervision before, during and after the competition.

The QUARTZ Event program is carried out in collaboration with the International Trail Running Association (ITRA), Athletes For Transparency association (AFT) and Ultra Sports Science Foundation (USS).

The QUARTZ Event program is managed by a Medical Commission solely composed of doctors. This Medical Commission can take advice from experts of its choice and specifically give a consultative advice to the race direction on the medical condition of participants.

This Medical Commission can go as far as to suggest to the race direction that a participant should be excluded from competition for health reasons before competition (« no start ») or not ranked after the competition for non-compliance with the procedures.

The QUARTZ Event Program is for each participant who agrees to:

  1. Declare to the Medical Commission the following medical information:

    • Any medical history and/or pathology, in particular those which may increase risks during competition.
    • The use of regular treatments or medication or dietary supplements at least during the 30 days prior to the start of the competition.
    • Request or use of a substance or method subject to a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).

The declaration of medical information to the Medical Commission is done through the ITRA health space for which each participant has access after having created a free runner account on the ITRA website: http://www.itra.run. The declared medical information is only accessible by the doctors of the Medical Commission, the designated experts as well as to the medical team during an eventual care during the competition.

2. Provide all urinary and/or blood and/or hair and/or salivary samples required from 30 days before the competition and up to 15 days after the competition and also consent to the associated analysis of these samples, on the understanding that the costs for sampling and analyses are covered directly by the Organization.

3. Do not participate in the competition when using:

Within 60 days before the start of the competition and during the competition

  • Intravenous iron infusion

Within 7 days before the start of the competition and during competition

  • Intravenous infusion
  • Gas inhalation
  • Substance subject to a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) according to the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) Prohibited List published annually
  • Glucocorticoids regardless of the mode of administration
  • Thyroid synthesis hormones except in case of partial or total removal of the thyroid or hypothyroidism of medical origin.

Within 24 hours before the start of the competition and during competition

  • Beta-2-agonist regardless of the mode of administration
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) regardless of the mode of administration

The possible use of these different substances may be identified in the context of the analysis carried out before and/or after the competition or any other means of investigation.

 

  1. Accept to answer any meeting request on site or remotely (phone or videoconference) that the Medical Commission may ask for in order to discuss their ability or not to participate in the competition or not to be rank after the competition.
  2. Submit any doping control form legible completed within 30 days before the start of the competition and up to 15 days after the competition.
  3. Accept the use, for the only purpose of research and in a strictly anonymous way, of data concerning him. Each participant has a right of access, rectification and opposition to data concerning him. The Medical Commission is the authority with which the participant can exercise this right.

Any unreasonable breach, refusal, or transmission of erroneous information in connection with the QUARTZ Event Program can result in the exclusion of the participant from the competition before the competition or not to be rank after the competition.

ANTI-DOPING CONTROL

Any competitor could be subject to an anti-doping control before, during or at the finish of an event. In the case of refusal or abstention, the athlete will be sanctioned as if he/she was found guilty of doping.

INSURANCE

Each competitor must, obligatorily, be in possession of a personal accident insurance which covers the cost of search and rescue and evacuation in France, Italy and Switzerland. Such insurance can be taken out with any organisation of the runner's choice, and notably with the  Fédération Française d'Athlétisme via the subscription to a 'Pass’Running – Pass J’aime Courir' or a license.

For members of the ITRA (International Trail Running Association) it is possible to subscribe to an Assistance – Repatriation insurance which covers the cost of search and rescue world-wide. For more information go to www.itra.run

NB : you pay for helicopter evacuation. The choice of evacuation method depends exclusively on the organization, who will systematically put the runner's security first.

The choice of the method of evacuation and the actual choice of hospital is at the discretion of the search and rescue and medical officials.

Expenses arising from the use of exceptional methods of rescue or evacuation have to be paid  by the person rescued who will also have to pay their return from the place to where they were evacuated. It falls to the runner to create their file and present it to their insurance company within the stated time limit.

RESPECT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

By registering for one of the UTMB® events, participants agree to respect the environment and the natural areas they pass though. In particular :

  • It is strictly forbidden to abandon your rubbish (gel tubes, paper, organic detritus, plastic wrappers...) along the race route. Trash/rubbish bins are available at each aid station and they must be used. The race stewards will be checking all along the race route.
  • All participants must keep their rubbish and wrappers with them until they can throw them in the bins provided at each aid station. The organization encourages runners to carry a bag or pouch in which to transport their waste to the next bin. Plastic bags for soiled paper are handed out with the race-bibs. They must be used for collecting any paper soiled during any urgent need along the route.
  • It is imperative that you follow the paths as they are way-marked, without short-cutting them. Actually, short-cutting a path causes erosion damaging the site.
  • No disposable dishes (cutlery, cups, bowls) will be distributed at any check point or aid station. This is to reduce the plastic usage by runners, as well as by the volunteers of the UTMB®. We invite you to bring your own utensils if you wish to eat hot meals in the aid stations.

ELITE RUNNERS

Having the status of an international elite gives rights and duties for all the athletes concerned. They are as below :

Rights :

  • In the interests of fair recognition of top athletes and fair registration management, we reserve places for elite athletes, who request a spot our races, according to specific criteria and based on their general ITRA performance index.

All registration requests must be sent by email to info@utmbmontblanc.com before January 2nd, 2020.

Runners meeting the criteria may benefit from the above registration conditions, if they have gained the required number of qualifying points for 2020.

  • At the starting line of each race, elite athletes are invited to take the lead of the group according to the following race-bib numbers :
    UTMB® : Elite start box 1: bibs 1 to 21 / Elite start box 2 : bibs 22 to 299
    CCC® : bibs 3001 to 3299
    TDS® : bibs 6001 to 6299
    OCC : bibs 10001 to 10299

Duties :

In return, elite runners agree to :

  • Attend to any press conference and official ceremony to which they are invited ;
  • Attend to any prize-giving ceremony that may concern them ;
  • Accept to carry a GPS tag, supplied by the organization at the start of the race, throughout the whole race; then to return this tag at the end of their race;
  • Show up at the starting line no later than 20 minutes before the start of the event.

Prize money:

  • The UTMB® organization has decided to devote part of its budget to the recognition of high-level athletes by introducing in 2018 an award system on 4 races (UTMB®, TDS®, CCC®, OCC). It is the recognition of a virtuous circle bonding the athletes and the event, an exchange of visibility in which the two parts participate in the success of the event
  • Prize money is paid within 2 months after the event. The organization has the right to delay the payment to any runner until they have fulfilled the obligations as per the race regulations, in particular with regard to the Quartz Programme

    In 2020, the remuneration will be split as follows:

RIGHTS FOR IMAGES

Every competitor expressly foregoes the right for any images during the event, just as they renounce any right of appeal to the organizers and their partners for the use of their image. Only the organization can transfer this right for images to any media, via an accreditation or relevant license.
Ultra-Trail®, Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®, UTMB®, CCC®, TDS® and PTL® are legally registered trademarks. All communication about the event or the use of images from the event must respect the name of the event, the registered trademarks and have official approval from the organization.

INDIVIDUAL SPONSORS

Runners who are sponsored can only display their sponsor's logos on their clothing and equipment used during the race. All other publicity accessories (flags, banners... ) are forbidden at all points of the race route including the finish , at the risk of a penalty given by the discretion of the race directors.

POLITICAL EXPRESSION

As per our ethical charter, any ostentatious display of political messages or images during the event is prohibited.

PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION POLICY

According to the French Data Protection Act of August 6th 1978, and in accordance with the new General Data Protection Regulations ( EU RGPD 2016/679 ), any competitor has the right to access and amend every information concerning him/her.

The information is collected as part of a registration for one of the UTMB® Mont-Blanc races, for the needs of the organization and in particular to identify each competitor in order to communicate him/her information related to his/her participation before, during or after the event.

The runner's data is kept in the database for 10 years. This period is renewable at each registration and corresponds to the legal data retention period of the medical and non-contraindication to the practice of athletics or running in competition certificate, or the sports card. Beyond these 10 years, and unless the runner authorizes the organization to keep his/her data, all data are deleted except the runner's surname, first name, date of birth, gender and nationality to maintain the rankings.

Any request for access or personal data modification will be processed as soon as possible and within a maximum period of 1 month of receiving it.

CNIL

According to the IT information and freedom law of August 6th 1978,  you have the right of access and rectification for all information concerning you. This information is used uniquely within the interior of the organisation and concerns technical data such as your email address. The organisation on no account uses your information for other ends. Conforming to the law, each runner has a right of access and rectification concerning themselves. To do this, please send us an email stating your surname, first name and race-bib number.

RACE ORGANIZATION: GENERAL OVERVIEW

RACE-BIBS

Race-bibs are handed over to each runner upon presentation of :

  • A valid photo ID
  • Your race pack and all the mandatory equipment.

The race-bib must be worn on the chest or stomach and must remain permanently and completely visible throughout the totality of the race. It must always be placed on top of all clothing and can in no case be positioned on a leg or pack. The name and partner's logos must not be either modified or hidden. The bib is the pass needed to access the shuttles, buses, aid stations, infirmaries, rest rooms, showers, bag drop-off or pick-up areas... Except in case of refusal to comply with a decision taken by a race official, the bib is never withdrawn but in case of withdrawal it is deactivated.

DROP BAGS / SPARE BAGS

UTMB® : each competitor receives with his bib a 30 litre bag with their race-bib.After filling it with the items of their choice and closing it, they can drop it off, at the end of the afternoon, at the welcome center in Chamonix, in the ENSA gym. This bag is taken to Courmayeur by the organization. Upon arriving in Courmayeur runners must withdraw their bag. When they leave the aid station they must leave -  in person - their bag in the allotted area . The bags are then returned to Chamonix.
NB : No drop bags in Champex. 

CCC® : each competitor receives a 30 litre bag with their race-bib which they can fill with their belongings, leaving it in the allotted area near the start. The bag is then returned to Chamonix.
NB : No drop bags in Champex.

TDS® : each competitor receives 2 x 30 litre bags with their race-bib. 1 bag is to be left just before the start and it must contain the belongings not needed during the race which will therefore be returned to the finishing line. 1 bag (not mandatory)  for any personal belongings required at the Beaufort aid station. During the race, each runner must, obligatorily, get their bag upon arrival at Beaufort and deposit it again, in the allotted area, before leaving so that it can be returned to  Chamonix.
The 2 bags are to be left at the allotted area near the starting line.

OCC : each competitor receives a 30 litre bag with their race-bib which they can fill with their belongings, leaving it in the allotted area near the starting line. The bag is then returned to Chamonix.

MCC : each competitor receives a 30 litre bag with their race-bib which they can fill with their belongings, leaving it in the allotted area near the starting line. The bag is then returned to Chamonix.

How to get your bags in Chamonix: The bags are returned to either the competitor or a family member or friend, uniquely upon presentation of the race-bib. The bags must be retrieved no later than 2 hours after the end of the race. After that time, the runner must come, in person, to retrieve their bag, at their own cost, from the organization in Chamonix.

The organization will ensure the repatriation to Chamonix of the bags of runners who have withdrawn, on condition that their withdrawal has been registered. The delay of the repatriation depends on logistical constraints and the organization cannot guarantee that all bags are brought to Chamonix before the end of the race. 

Only bags supplied by the organisation will be transported. Poles are not allowed in these bags. As the contents of the bags are not checked, no dispute about the contents on arrival is admissible. It is recommended not to place valuable items in the bags.
It is advisable to keep toiletries and a change of clothing in Chamonix.

REFRESHMENTS

The organisation ensures the presence of solid and liquid refreshments along the race-route.   The refreshment posts  supply  drinks and food for consuming in situ. The organisation supplies still water and energising drink for filling water bottles/hydration packs and personal beakers are obligatory. The runner must take care, when leaving each refreshment post, that they have the necessary quantity of food and drink to last them to the next refreshment post.

Only runners wearing a visible race-bib who have been duly checked have access to the refreshment posts.
The race guide and the relevant pages on the web-site have a complete list of refreshment posts and what they serve.

CHECK POSTS

A check is carried out at the arrival at a refreshment post and at certain security posts.
Unexpected check posts are set-up at  posts other than those of refreshment or security posts. Their location is not divulged by the organisation.

WAY-MARKING

For better sighting at night , the way-markers are fitted, in part, with yellow reflective material which attracts the light of your torch.
ATTENTION : if you don't see any, turn back !
In respect for the environment no paint is used on the paths.

MAXIMUM AUTHORISED TIME AND TIME BARRIERS

The maximum time for the event, for the totality of the route is fixed at:

  • UTMB® : 46 hrs 30 mins
  • CCC®* : 26 hrs 30 mins
  • TDS® : 44 hrs
  • OCC : 14 hrs 30 mins
  • MCC : 10 hrs  

*CCC®: the maximum time authorised and the time barriers are calculated on the departure time of the 3rd wave.

The time limit of the start (time barriers) from the main check points will be defined and printed in the Runner's Guide and on the web-site. In the case of a change  (cf § Exceptional Conditions), the new time barriers will be announced via SMS/text message.

These time barriers are calculated to allow participants to arrive at the finish within the maximum time allowed, while having made eventual stops ( rest, food...). In order to be authorised to continue with an event, competitors must leave the check point before the fixed time (whatever their time of arrival at the check point).

All competitors excluded from the race who wish to continue the route can only do so after having returned their race-bib and under their own responsibility and in complete autonomy.

SECURITY AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

Security posts are positioned at various points along the route. These posts have a radio or telephone link to the race HQ for security  (+33 9 72 16 67 25). A regulation medical team is present throughout the events at the race security HQ  in Chamonix.

These security posts are designed to give assistance to any person in danger by their own or public means.

It is up to a runner in trouble or seriously hurt to call for the help :

  • By going to a security post
  • By calling race HQ
  • By asking another runner to alert the security service
  • By using the SOS app LiveRun

Every runner must give assistance to any person in danger and alert the security services.

In the case where it is impossible to contact race HQ, you can make a direct call to one of the national security services  (most particularly if you find yourself in a zone where only emergency calls are possible)

  • 112 (France and Italy)
  • 144 (Switzerland)

Do not forget that hazards of all sorts, linked to the environment and the race, may require you to wait assistance for a longer time than expected. Your security therefore depends upon the quality of that which you have put in your pack.

All the personnel, medics, paramedics, search and rescue and official guides, as well as any person so designated by the organisation are able to :

  • exclude any competitor from the race who is judged to be unable to continue the event
  • oblige any competitor to use any element of obligatory equipment
  • have evacuated by any means any runners who are judged to be in danger
  • orientate patients to a better treatment structure which is better adapted to their needs

A runner who contacts a doctor or search and rescue personnel submits themselves to their authority and agrees to accept their decisions
As from the moment where the state of a runner's health  justifies treatment via an intravenous drip, they are obligatorily excluded from the race.

An infirmary will be accessible in Chamonix throughout the duration of the events. Runners who have a severe medical problem may present themselves. Minor treatments will be carried out at the discretion of the personnel and subject to their availability.

Each runner must stay on the way-marked route, even to sleep.
In the case of the necessity to sleep along the way you are highly recommended to use the  'sleep-bib' supplied by the organisation. This bib states that you have the need to sleep a little without being disturbed.
All runners who voluntarily venture from  the way-marked course are no longer under the responsibility of the organisation.

FINISH

When you finish, you will receive a finisher's gift.
A post-race meal is served at the  UCPA centre in Chamonix.

SHOWERS

There is the possibility of a hot shower but only at the end of the race. Access to the end of race showers is, strictly, only accessible to runners. The race-bib is the pass for accessing the showers.
Throughout the course, showers - when there are any – are only available on medical advice.
Access to the rest area and showers is strictly limited to runners with bare feet.

REST

A rest area in Chamonix is available exclusively for runners of the UTMB®,  CCC® and TDS® .
This room is strictly reserved for runners who have just finished their race.
In no way does this constitute a solution for  accommodation for the entire night. Runners having finished their race who wish to prolong their stay must have their own accommodation.
UTMB® (uniquely) : At les Chapieux,  Courmayeur and Champex, each competitor can benefit from a rest area (area with camp beds and blankets).

RANKING AND RECOMPENSE

For each race, a general ranking, male and female, and for each category, male and female, is established (see category details here).
UTMB® : the first 10 men and the first 10 women in the general ranking, as well as the first 3 of each category receive a trophy and a prize.
CCC®, TDS®, OCC et MCC : the first 5 men and the first 5 women in the general ranking, as well as the first 3 in each category  receive a trophy and a prize.

Runners must be present at their prize giving. The trophies and prizes are only distributed at the ceremony.

ABANDONMENT AND REPATRIATION

Except in the case of injury, a runner must not abandon outside of a check point. They must inform the person responsible for the post, or signal their abandonment via the  LiveRun app and inform the race HQ.

In the case of the decision to abandon between two check points, the runner must go to the nearest check point where they announce their abandonment.

The runner keeps hold of their race-bib because it is the pass for accessing shuttle buses, buses, meals, treatment rooms...

Repatriation works in the following manner :

  • Buses are available from certain refreshment posts marked by a pictogram «bus» on time charts so as to repatriate runners who abandon to Chamonix.
  • Runners who abandon at other security or refreshment posts whose state of health does not necessitate an evacuation must go to as fast as possible and under their own means the nearest point of repatriation.
  • For that which concerns refreshment or security posts accessible by car or  4x4:
    • at the closure of the post, the organisation may, within the means possible, repatriate runners who have abandoned and who are still present at the post
    • in the case of unfavourable weather conditions which justify the partial or total  stoppage of the race, the organisation ensures the repatriation of the runners as fast as possible

PENALTIES - DISQUALIFICATION

Race stewards present along the race-route, and those responsible for the different refreshment and security posts are able to enforce the regulations and immediately apply a penalty in the case of non-respect for these regulations, according to the following chart :

CLAIMS

Any claim must be made to us by email, within a delay 10 days after the end of the event.

EXCEPTIONAL CONDITIONS

If the circumstances require it, the organisation reserves the right to, at any moment, modify the route, start times, time barriers, position of refreshment or security posts, and any other aspect related to the good  functioning of the events.

In the case of a  force majeure, weather conditions which are too unfavourable or any other circumstance which puts the security of the competitors at risk, the organisation reserves the right to :

  • defer the start by a few hours maximum
  • modify the time barriers
  • cancel the event
  • neutralise the event
  • stop the race in progress

In the case of the cancellation of an event, for whatever reason, decided more than 15 days before the date of the start, partial reimbursement of the registration fee will be made. The amount of this reimbursement will be fixed so as to allow the organisation to  deal with all the irremediable expenses committed to the date of the cancellation. In case of cancellation decided less than 15 days before the departure or in case of interruption of the race, for whatever reason, no refund of registration fees will be made.

RUNNERS' GUIDE

A guide is downloadable from the web-site www.utmbmontblanc.com as from the month of June. It includes maps of the routes and practical information such as time barriers, refreshment post locations, security posts, as well as the areas with access for accompanying persons.

FILMS

The 2018 films will be available for preview via the runner's pages as from November.

INSURANCE

Civil responsibility
The organisation takes out a third party  insurance for the duration of the event. This third-party insurance guarantees the pecuniary consequences of its responsibility, for that of those working for them and participants.

CANCELLATION OF A REGISTRATION

Any cancellation of a registration must be made in writing either by email or post. No withdrawal is registered by telephone.

The reimbursement of fees paid at registration will be made by partial re-credit to the bank account associated to the credit-card used at the time of registering, under the following conditions :

Registration is nominative. There is no authorisation for transferring a registration to another person whatever the motive.

CANCELLATION REGISTRATION GUARANTEE

UTMB® CCC® TDS®

Any person at the moment of their registration can subscribe to cancellation guarantee, for an additional cost of 19€  per person, added to the sum of the registration fee at the moment of payment.

OCC MCC

Any person at the moment of their registration can subscribe to cancellation guarantee, for an additional cost of 12€ (OCC) / 8€ (MCC)  per person, added to the sum of the registration fee at the moment of payment

The objective of the guarantee is  to completely  refund the expenses of registration, in the case where a runner asks to cancel his registration because of one of the following reasons :

  • an accident, a serious illness or the death of the runner themselves ,
  • a serious illness necessitating hospitalisation or the death of a spouse or common law partner, or close relative in the thirty days preceding the event.
  • The pregnancy of a registered runner, or the birth of a child in the 15 days before or after the race.  

In the case of an accident or serious illness of the runner, it is necessary to supply a medical certificate signed and stamped by the doctor giving evidence of the runner's incapacity to participate in the race. Any other cause of cancellation must be justified by a signed and stamped certificate supplied by the relevant and legal authority.

Indemnity conditions : all requests for reimbursement must be sent to us, accompanied by a medical certificate, no later than 10 days after the end of the event. The request will be processed in the two months following the event.

The cancellation of a registration or the  non-participation in the race to which one is registered does not entitle the runner to benefit from a priority registration a subsequent  year.

CANCELLATION OF A REGISTRATION IN THE CASE OF  OSTEO-ARTICULAR INJURY

In the case of a runner's non-chronic osteo-articular or muscular injury, and only in this case, arising after registration and which is not completely curable by the day of the race, the organisation recommends that the injured runner does not put themselves at unnecessary risk, cancels their registration (cancellation conditions as  above) and asks for a priority registration, for the same race, during a future event.

All requests for priority, in the case of a cancellation due to injury, must reach us accompanied by a complete medical file (detailed medical report and  image examination results confirming the diagnostic ) by September 10th at the latest and uniquely by post (the medical committee will not treat any files sent by email).  Any incomplete files will be rejected.

The requests will be treated by November 1st at the latest. The medical committee's decision is final and without appeal.

If the medical committee's decision is favourable, the runner will benefit from priority registration for the same race in a future year . Priority registration only means avoiding the draw. The registration is subject to all the usual registration regulations : qualifying points, registration fees, medical certificate...
