The PTL® (Petite Trotte à Léon) is one of the 5 events on offer within the framework of the UTMB®.
It opens the event. Its conception is original and its unusual specificities distinguish it from other races. The spirit of the PTL® depends upon mental engagement, an adventurous team spirit as well as sporting values and also those of the mountains.
This ultra-endurance pedestrian event leads participants on a large tour of Mont-Blanc (290km and 26500m of ascent),taking high routes, without way-markers on the ground, which necessitates the sense of orientation on and off paths. Each year the route is different to allow for the discovery of the richness and diversity of paths in France, Italy and Switzerland within the Mont-Blanc massif.
The PTL® is realised in teams of 2 or 3 inseparable and loyally supportive people, without final ranking. The teams move through a rough, technically exacting and mentally and physically demanding mountain environment.
With regard to the difficulties inherent to this event, applications are selected from a file of experiences submitted by each established team (see paragraph 2017 Registration).
For its 10th year the start of the PTL® is fixed for Monday August 28th 2017 at 9am, from the Place du Triangle de l'Amitié in Chamonix. The finishers will be judged in the same place, until Sunday September 3rd at 16:30, so a maximum time of 151:30 hours.
The proposed course around Mont-Blanc, omnipresent, and its prestigious satellites, is this year still innovative and outstanding. You will cross little known areas, often difficult to access and with the most breath-taking views.
2017 PTL® regulations
The itinerary taken by the Petite Trotte à Léon includes technical passages very much more difficult than those encountered in most other trail races (notably the UTMB®). It requires a very good knowledge of the mountain environment.
Some passages may present objective dangers: steep slopes, risk of stone falls, very narrow paths, the crossing of stone fields or névés, absence at intervals of paths or clearly marked track...
The route is NOT WAY-MARKED and is often FAR FROM INHABITED ZONES. It is to be realised incomplete autonomy between life-bases and partner refuges.
So as to progress in security competitors must be able to master navigation with a GPS and also have sufficient knowledge in map reading, the use of a compass and of an altimeter. They must also be able to confront naturally difficult conditions.
The PTL® is an event co-organised by the Les Trailers du Mont Blanc (association law 1901 officially registered on 29/11/ 2003 under n° 1627, Club FFA n° 074060) and Sarl Autour du Mont-Blanc within the framework of the UTMB®.
It is directed by a Race Committee whose decisions are final.
The 2017 PTL® starts from Chamonix in the form of a circuit in the middle and high mountain of around 290 kilometres with about 26 500 metres of ascent.
The start is fixed for 09:00, Monday, August 28nd 2017 from the place du Triangle de l’Amitié, Chamonix; the finishers will be registered in the same place until 16:30, Sunday, September 32rd 2017, which gives a permitted maximum time of 151:30 hours to complete the route.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE EVENT
- The PTL® has, as an objective, the realisation of a given route without going over the time limit. It is not considered as a competitive event and as such does not give official finishing positions.
- It is open to teams of men, women or mixed of 2 or 3 people. The total number of runners will be limited to 300.
- Teams are strictly inseparable. In the case of an abandonment of a runner in a team of 3, the 2 remaining runners can only continue after ensuring that their team member has been left at a life-base or refuge and if they have the authorisation of the race HQ. In the case of the abandonment of a runner in a team of 2, both runners have to stop.
- The route is to be realised in semi-self-sufficiency, the teams managing their refreshments and rest time as they wish. Along the route the organisations offers:
- 4 life bases open 24/24 where the competitors have free access to open dormitories and meals. Except for the first life base, they will also have access to their drop sacks.
- partner refuges/mountain huts, open 24/24, where competitors have free access to a dormitory (according to availability) and a meal.
- services, in any other mountain huts which are not partners, are at the competitors expense, while respecting the mountain hut's opening hours and the peace and quiet of the other clients
- Assistance is only tolerated at the organisation's life-bases. It is strictly forbidden at other points along the route, including partner refuges, when passing through villages or along roads, at the risk of immediate disqualification.
Registration is to be made by presenting a file stating each team member's previous experience. Technical experience in the mountain environment, sporting history as well as team motivation will be taken in to account (see Registration page).
CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
The PTL® is open to all persons born in or before 1997 (categories espoir to veteran), licensed or not.
To validate their registration, each runner must submit a specific medical certificate. It must be posted on the runner's page before May 31st 2017 (the organisation will not accept certificates sent by email or post).
Individual accident :
Each competitor must have their own personal accident insurance policy covering the costs of research and rescue in France, Italy and Switzerland. Such an insurance can be provided by any body of the competitor's choice, and notably from the Fédération Française d'Athlétisme by the subscription for a licence or even with the Fédération Française de la Montagne et de l’Escalade or the Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne (with an Air Glacier card for Switzerland).
NB : you have to pay for helicopter evacuation. The choice for evacuation depends entirely upon the organisation, which will always prioritise the runners' security.
The organiser signs a third-party insurance policy for the period of the event . This third-party insurance guarantees the pecuniary consequences of its responsibility, that of its officials and participants.
Each race-bib is issued individually to each competitor upon the presentation of photographic identity, after having signed a commitment on their honour to keep the obligatory equipment with them at all times throughout the race.
It must be presented at any checks organised a long the race route.
In Chamonix, the race-bib is “the pass” necessary to access shuttle buses, buses, refreshment posts, rest areas, showers, and sack drop-off and pick-up points.
In addition to each race-bib, each team member will receive an ID bracelet, to be worn on the wrist throughout the race.
MODIFICATION OF TEAM AND CANCELLATION
The original composition of teams can be changed, until July 30th at the latest. As for all candidates, each new team member added to an already formed team must submit an aptitude file. They will be evaluated by the race committee which will take the decision whether to accept or not their registration, their decision will be final.
Any cancellation of an entire team must be made by email or registered letter. No cancellation can be accepted by telephone or fax. Reimbursement of the fees paid can only be made under the following conditions :

After 31st July no reimbursement is possible.
In the case of one team member cancelling, it will not be possible to recuperate part of the cost.
Time barriers are defined for the life-bases and any other area judged by the organisation to be imperative for reasons of security.They are calculated so that participants can arrive at the finish within the maximum permitted time of hours (151:30).
In order to be authorised to continue with the event, teams must be able to leave the check point before the time indicated.
All contestants excluded from the event by the organisation and who wish to continue the course do so at their own risk after having returned their race-bib and tag.
ABANDONMENT AND REPATRIATION
The organisation assures the repatriation of runners (who abandon or who to fail to meet the time barrier) from life-bases, without commitment of a timeframe.
In the case of abandonment at all other points along the route, without exception, runners must organise their return by their own means.
In the case of abandonment, the return the spares' sack to Chamonix can not be guaranteed before the end of the event.
ALL THAT IS SUPPLIED BY THE ORGANISATION
- Race-bib (one for each team member).
- Spares' sack of about 50L capacity (1 per runner)
- GPS tracker allowing the organisation to follow the team from the race HQ
- Set of 1/25 000 maps (a set for each team).
- Roadbook with a description of the itinerary only in French, English, Italian and Spanish (one per team).
Files of the tracks and waypoints to download on to personal GPSs, by, at the latest, 15 days before the event.

- Energising meals and dormitories in the 4 life bases
- Drop sacks in 3 life bases (no sacks in the 1st life base)

- 6 meal tickets per runner to use in the partner refuges of the runner's choice
- Rest area, post-race medical assistance, end of race meal in Chamonix.
- Gift : finisher's jacket and traditional souvenir small cow bell for all finishers
- Personal certificate for all who finish the race.
TRACKING AND CONTROL
A GPS tracker is supplied to each team. This tag emits a signal every 15 minutes indicating the team’s position. This information will be made available to the race HQ who continually follow the progression of the teams, ensuring that they follow the route. This information will be available on the internet.
SECURITY AND THE PROCEDURE TO FOLLOW IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT OR INCIDENT
The race HQ (PC Course) based in Chamonix and the controllers along the route will be the runner’s only interlocutors to whom they may turn concerning any problems they encounter. If necessary, they will be responsible for alerting and co-ordinating the public rescue services.
In the event of an accident:
- the runners should initially use their first aid kit,
- in the case of an emergency or if impossible to move it is imperative to alert the race HQ by any means.
In the case of bad weather conditions, and for reasons of security, the Race Committee reserves he right to modify the route, to stop that race or change the time barriers. Its decisions are final.
For obvious reasons of security the participants agree, on their honour, to keep with them at all times the obligatory equipment listed below. Systematic checks wil be carried out a life-bases and at random intervals along the route.
Obligatory Individual Equipment
- Minimum 2 litres of water
- Supply of emergency energising food
- 2 head-torches in good working order with enough spare batteries to last for a week
- Survival blanket (minimum 140x210cm)
- Mobile telephone with international roaming option (no masked number)
- A charger (solar, portable, rechargeable…)
- 1 tee-shirt of breathable fabric
- 2 long-sleeved under breathable underwear
- 1 jacket and pair of trousers which are breathable and 100% waterproof
- A waterproof cape
- 1 pair of long sports trousers or leggings
- 1 pair of sun-glasses
- 1 pair of gloves
- 1 hat
- 1 glow-stick/light stick activated by bending (supplied by the organisation)
- 1 multi-use beaker
- Compass and altimeter
- Crampons (with minimum 1cm spikes)
Obligatory equipment for each team
- 1 GPS in which all the tracks supplied by the organisation have been downloaded. This apparatus must be able to accept at least 20 tracks of at least 5000 points each.
- The Roadbook and the route maps supplied by the organisation
- A lightweight tent or survival shelter (100% rain and wind proof and large enough to shelter all team members in case of emergency or very bad weather).
- A first-aid kit to allow the treatment of small injuries and minor infections (non-exhaustive list in annex).
- Cash (euros and Swiss francs), for the most part refuges (huts) do not except credit cards

ACCEPTATION OF THE RACE REGULATIONS AND ETHIC
Participation in the PTL® requires the unconditional acceptance of the regulations and ethics of the event which are available at www.utmbmontblanc.com
Every competitor relinquishes their claim to photographic copyright during the event, and he relinquishes any recourse against the organiser and against his approved partners for the use of his image. Only the organisation can pass on these rights for the image in any media, via an accreditation or an adapted license.
Ultra-Trail®, Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc®, UTMB®, CCC®, TDS® and PTL® are legal trademarks. Any communication about the event or use of photographs of the event must be made respecting the name of the event, the trademarks and with the official agreement of the organisation.

In case of nose bleeds
To treat irritation of the buttocks or between the thighs
- Antiseptic eye-wash
To treat blisters if one of the runners in the team is able to do the following : éosine + 5cc syringe + subcutaneous needle
- Draw the éosine into the syringe then pierce right through the blister
- Draw the serous fluid into the syringe
- Re-inject the mix of serous fluid/ éosine back in to the blister
- Re-draw the mixture and remove the syringe
- Remove the remaining fluid with some cotton wool and then use a protective plaster or apply some Nok d’Akiléine.
- If there is blood present in the blister then there is tissue damage so disinfect the area carefully.
Eg : straight paracetamol (example : Doliprane, Dafalgan…) or mix (example : Di-Antalvic…)
For muscle aches, articulation …
Avoid using aspirin or anti-inflammatories, they are toxic for the kidneys or the stomach which are already in heavy demand from due to the exigency of the race
Respect intense pain which may be a sign of a serious problem which could necessitate stopping the race and seeking medical advice.
